How long do bison live?

The typical lifespan of a bison is 15-20 years old. Although some have been known to live well into their 20s. Factors such as food and water resources as well as environmental conditions and predators can impact the lifespan of bison.

How long is a bison pregnant?

Bison pregnancy lasts around 9.5 months. Breeding season occurs every year in July through August. Calves arrive in spring usually between April, May, and early June.

What is a baby bison called?

Baby bison are referred to as calves, although often times called “red dogs”. This comes from their bright and vibrant reddish tan coat that they will have from birth until around 3 months old. After 3 months they will begin to develop the typical brown/black hair and begin to develop the distinct bison hump on their backs.

Are bison dangerous?

Typically, bison appear as a docile animal but things can change quickly if they sense a threat. A telling sign of an alerted bison is a raised tail. Respect their space and they will respect yours!
